Melton, Mascarenas Earn ABCA Awards


ALBANY, Ore. — Former Roadrunners Jacob Melton and Richard Mascarenas earned high honors from the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA), head coach Andy Peterson announced today.

Melton, a freshman lefthanded centerfielder from Medford, Ore., was named to the ABCA Pacific Association all-America Third Team.

Mascarenas Mascarenas, the Roadrunners' sophomore shortstop from Las Vegas, Nev., was named to the ABCA Pacific Association Nortwest All-Region First Team.

Both Melton and Mascarenas were first team all-NWAC and all-Southern Region selections this past season. Melton hit .365 with three home runs and 39 RBIs. Mascarenas hit .297 with 29 RBIs.

Additionally, both players will be part of the Oregon State University baseaball program this year.

ABCA/Rawlings All-Region first-team selections, which were announced on Monday, were nominated for All-America honors. In all divisions, the ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove Teams will be announced on Wednesday, June 19. The ABCA/Rawlings National Pitchers of the Year will be announced Monday, June 24 followed by ABCA/Rawlings National Players of the Year on Wednesday, June 26.

The selection process is led by the ABCA Pacific Association Division All-America Committee, which is chaired by Paul Moore of the California Community College Baseball Coaches Association.

The ABCA All-America team was first recognized in 1949 and now includes nine divisions: NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA, NJCAA Divisions I, II and III, Pacific Association Division, and high school. ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove teams were first recognized in 2007.

The ABCA, founded in 1945, is the primary professional organization for baseball coaches at the amateur level. Its over 11,000 members represent all 50 states and 25 countries. Since its initial meeting of 27 college baseball coaches in June 1945, Association membership has broadened to include eight divisions: NCAA Division I, II and III, NAIA, NJCAA, Pacific Association Division, High School and Youth. The 76th annual ABCA Convention will be held Jan. 2-5, 2020 in Nashville, Tennessee.
