Roadrunners Help Hoover Elementary School Kick Off Read-a-Thon
CORVALLIS — Hoover Elementary School in Corvallis got a little help form Linn-Benton Community College student-athletes today when it kicked off the school's annual Husky Read-a-Thon fundraising event. More than two dozen LBCC student-athletes from each of the college's four sports participated in today's event.
Roadrunner men's basketball coach Everett Hartman organized the community outreach effort.
"The wife of a former student of mine works at Hoover and asked if we'd be interested in helping," Hartman said. "I thought it would be a great way for our players to give back to the community."
Last year Hoover students reported reading more than 80,000 minutes during the Husky Read-a-Thon. All funds raised from the Read-a-Thon go towards classroom enhancements to support all Hoover students.
"It was a lot of fun seeing how excited they all are about reading," said Ellie Weber, a sophomore volleyball player from Roseburg. "Having the opportunity to connect with the students, especially because I am going to school to become a teacher, was so special."
