ALBANY, Ore. - After 23 innings and over seven hours of baseball, the Linn-Benton Community College baseball team captured two important home victories over Mt. Hood Community College. The hosts won the first game 4-3 in 14 innings, while cruising to a 13-6 victory in game two.
Game 1:
The Roadrunners (25-5-1, 21-5 NWAC South) trailed early in the contest, as the visitors scored in the top of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Linn-Benton would respond in the second inning with a Jake Dodge RBI triple that scored Sam Giansante, then would take a 2-1 lead in the third inning as Kolten Lindstrom would put a ball into play and advance to second base on an error that would score Bryant Starr.
The Saints (8-29-1, 6-20 NWAC South) would fire back with a tying run in the sixth inning and would take a 3-2 advantage in the top of the eighth inning. The Roadrunners would again answer with a tying run in the bottom of the eighth inning as Chase Logan laid down a sacrifice that scored Lindstrom from third to even the score at 3-3.
Both teams would provide plenty of hits, 12 for Mt. Hood and 13 for the Roadrunners, but each team also left 17 runners on base. The bottom of the fourteenth started with Eli Rolfe reaching base on an error, then advancing to second on a Logan single. Giansante stepped up to bat and laid down a terrific bunt that forced an error from the third baseman and scored Rolfe to cap off one of the longest games in the storied history of Linn-Benton baseball.
Game 2:
The second contest saw the home team jump out to an early advantage, scoring 12 runs in the first five innings to take a commanding 12-0 lead. Mt. Hood started a rally in the sixth inning, scoring six runs but it was too little, too late as the Roadrunners would tack on an insurance run in the seventh inning and win by a final score of 13-6.
Linn-Benton's offense stayed hot, seeing ten different batters record a hit and nine different batters recording an RBI. Starting pitcher Jake Von Lubken got the win for the Roadrunners, going five innings and scattering five hits while allowing no runs.
The Roadrunners will travel to Mt. Hood Community College Saturday, April 26 for two more contests against the Saints. The first game is scheduled for a 1:00 PM start and nine innings while the second game is slated for a 4:00 PM start and seven innings.
