Roadrunner Walk Off Clinches Sweep of Storm
ALBANY, Ore. - The Linn-Benton baseball team needed extra innings to defeat the Storm of Chemeketa Community College but managed to win both games of the home doubleheader. The Roadrunners (21-3, 13-3 NWAC South) won the first game 13-5, then walked it off 5-4 in the tenth inning of game two which was scheduled for seven innings.
Game 1: The host Roadrunners struck first with a Mark Carpenter RBI single in the bottom of the first inning to score Noah Scharer, followed by a solo homerun from Chanz Flores in the bottom of the third inning to take a 2-0 lead. Chemeketa (4-22, 3-13 NWAC South) responded with one run in the fourth inning and three runs in the fifth inning to take a 4-2 lead.
Linn-Benton would answer in the fifth as an Aiden Hazen ground out scored Kellen Segel, followed by a triple from Nick Biagi that scored both Flores and Jackson Fera as the hosts retook the lead 5-4. Fera would draw a walk in the sixth with the bases loaded to score Scharer then a wild pitch scored Segel to extend the lead to 7-4. Segel's RBI single in the seventh scored Landon Lea followed by a sacrifice fly RBI from Flores to send Scharer across the plate. Fera would then reach base on an error that scored Segel to make it 10-4.
Chemeketa got a run back in the eighth inning, but an RBI single for Lea scored Hazen and Matthew Talbot finished the scoring for the Roadrunners with a two run shot that made the final score 13-5. Jake Johnson earned the win in relief while Evan Lehnert recorded the save.
Game 2: The Storm got off to a hot start in the second contest, scoring in the top of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Linn-Benton retook the lead in the bottom of the third inning on a single from Flores that scored Tyson McGrorty and Jack Lussier making it 2-1. Chemeketa responded with a pair of runs in the fifth inning to gain a 3-2 advantage. The Roadrunners tied it up in the sixth inning on a Seth Willy RBI single to score Biagi and the game went into extra innings.
Chemeketa scored in the top of tenth inning to take a 4-3 advantage, but Linn-Benton would respond once again in the bottom of the inning as Carpenter scored on a wild pitch. With the game tied, runners on the corners and two outs, Lussier singled to score Biagi and walk it off for the hosts. Dayne Castillo was credited with the win in relief.
The Roadrunners will next travel to take on the Riverhawks of Umpqua Community College. That contest will now be played on Thursday, April 2 in Roseburg with first pitch moved to 12:00PM and 3:00PM. Both contests are scheduled for nine innings.
