Linn-Benton Wins Two of Three Against Lane
ALBANY, Ore. - The Linn-Benton baseball team started hot and finished strong to win two out of three games against the Titans of Lane Community College. The Roadrunners (33-7, 25-7 NWAC South) started the day by completing their extra inning contest from Wednesday, April 29 with a 5-4 win in the 14th inning. The Titans (31-15, 21-11 NWAC South) won the first game of the Saturday series by a score of 5-3, but the host Roadrunners rallied for a 5-2 win in the final contest of the day.
Extra Innings Completion: Linn-Benton started the day as the designated visitors in the top of the fourteenth inning with an RBI single from Tyson McGrorty to score Boston Caron and make it 5-4 heading into the bottom of the inning. Pitcher Jake Johnson struck out two of the three batters he faced in the bottom of the inning to secure the win for Linn-Benton and earn the pitching victory as well.
Game 1: Linn-Benton was the designated home team for both games of the Saturday series and started strong as a Chanz Flores sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first scored both Noah Scharer and Bryant Starr to give the hosts a 2-0 lead. Lane would get a run back in the fourth, but a Jackson Fera triple in the bottom of the fourth scored Kellen Segel to make it a 3-1 advantage.
Lane would score three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 4-3 lead, then added a run in the seventh to make it 5-3 as the Roadrunners were unable to score again and fell to the visitors.
Game 2: In the final contest of the day, scheduled for seven innings, the Titans scored in the top of the first before a Mark Carpenter RBI single in the second inning scored Flores to make it 1-1. The Titans would again take a one run lead in the fifth inning, but in the bottom of that inning with the bases loaded Scharer would hit a ball through the infield that also got by the centerfielder allowing Carpenter, Caron and Tyson McGrorty to score and giving the Roadrunners a 4-2 lead.
Scharer would then score on a groundout from Starr to give the hosts a 5-2 lead. Pitcher Talon McGrorty earned the win after five strong innings and Kyle Miller came on in relief to record the save.
The Roadrunners will host their final regular season home contests on Wednesday, May 6 against the Saints of Mt. Hood Community College. First pitch for those nine inning contests are slated for 1:00PM and 4:00PM.
