Roadrunners Defeat Cougars at Home

ALBANY, Ore. - The Linn-Benton baseball team put together a complete team performance with stellar pitching and timely hitting in a pair of wins against Clackamas Community College. The Roadrunners (26-4, 18-4 NWAC South) defeated the Cougars (7-14, 6-12 NWAC South) 4-1 in the first contest then 5-0 in the second. Both were nine inning games at Dick McClain Field.

Game 1: Clackamas struck first, scoring in the top of the third inning to take a 1-0 lead. Linn-Benton would answer in the bottom of the third with an Emmett Stacher RBI single that scored Noah Scharer. The Roadrunners took the lead in the fifth inning as Mark Carpenter recorded a sacrifice fly to score Scharer to make it 2-1. The hosts would score again in the sixth on an RBI single from Bryant Starr to score Camden Johnson and again in the eighth as Scharer earned an RBI on a sacrifice fly to score Nick Biagi.

That was more than enough run support for starter Lane Simonsen who allowed just one run on six hits as he struck out five to earn the win. Reliever Dayne Castillo came on to pick up the save with four strong innings allowing just two hits and striking out three.

Game 2: The second contest saw Linn-Benton jump out to an early lead as Scharer's single in the second inning scored Seth Willy and Tyson McGrorty to give the hosts a 2-0 advantage. Willy would earn two RBIs in the fifth inning as he singled to score Starr and Chanz Flores stretching it to a 4-0 lead.

Kellen Segel's RBI single in the seventh inning scored Starr to make it 5-0, as pitcher Cooper Yudhishthu was dominant on the mound. The freshman scattered three hits over six-plus innings of work while striking out ten Clackamas batters in the victory. Jake Johnson was strong in relief striking out four batters in just over two innings of work.

Linn-Benton will next travel north to take on the Cougars in a pair of games on Saturday, April 11. Those games are scheduled to be played at Oregon City High School with first pitch set for 1:00PM and 4:00PM.
